Mr. Zafar Abbas earned his B.Sc. (Hons) in Agronomy from University of Agriculture Faisalabad in 1971 and then MS Agriculture from University of California, Chico USA in 1989. He is an Irrigation Agronomist and has almost 40 years of experience in the field of; social mobilization of farmers, designing of irrigation system/carrying out precision land leveling, execution of civil works on community water courses, irrigation agronomy practices and Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E). he was the founder member to establish Project Monitoring Unit (PMU) of National Program for improvement of Watercourses (NPIW) Punjab. He worked as Director (Technical) and inducted monitoring of the project activities throughout Punjab till completion of his tenure in 2010. He also remained involved in training of farmers, WUAs/WM staff for adoption of improved irrigation system, designing & construction of field drains to reduce water logging and provision of advisory services to farmers regarding high efficiency irrigation systems. He served in Agriculture Department, Government of the Punjab at different positions and retired as Director Technical (Program Management Unit) during 2010 and he worked with NESPAK as Agronomist for about two years. He also worked as Deputy Director (M&E) to monitor OFWM projects in the Punjab. He possesses a vast experience to work with farmers, particularly in remote areas of the province, for social mobilization and persuading them to adopt recently evolved on-farm efficient agricultural practices. He is working as head of the Water Resources Management Section of SACAN Services. He has gained rich experience of demonstration, dissemination and capacity building of farmers/water users, ASPs and professionals in climate smart agriculture resource conservation practices/technologies and developed farm machinery (LASER land leveling, bed planting, ridge sowing, crop residue management through zero tillage, ZT pak/happy seeder, fertilizer band placement drill, high efficiency irrigation systems), high efficiency irrigation system, on-farm storage, use of bio-fertilizer biozote and rapid soil analysis kit to enhance land & water profitability and productivity.
