Bed and Furrow Irrigation System

Bed and Furrow irrigation permits growing of crops on beds with less water. This technique has been tested for various crops and has proved quite successful for cotton, wheat, maize, rice etc. Cotton was grown on more than three million acres during last year by adopting with this practice. This irrigation practice has also being practiced for planting of maize, wheat and potato. The technique is also being evaluated for rice production at farmers’ fields for last three years. It has potential to be the technology of the future as its adoption can make it possible to grow more rice with less water. SACAN is coordinating with other research and development organizations to refine these techniques. In-addition to this, SACAN is also assisting farmers to adopt this technology by provision of precision planters.
